We want to be the New Zealand and Australian leader in sustainable building materials, construction and distribution, and we've set ourselves some ambitious goals to get there.
Our sustainability strategy focuses on what is most important to our business - our people, communities, customers, and investors - and where our actions will lead to meaningful change.
To be part of a sustainable future, we are working on six areas:
Careful management of our resources and emissions
Addressing climate change is a huge challenge we face globally. For this reason, we have committed to achieving a 30% reduction in our Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) carbon emissions by 2030. This target is based on keeping global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius.
Our target is verified by the Science Based Targets initiative, a recognised international third-party verification body, and in line with the goals set in the Paris agreement.
A summary of our FY19 emissions can be found in our 2019 Annual Report.
Supporting our people and communities
At Fletcher Building, our people are our most important asset. We are focused on creating a diverse and engaged workforce with a culture of safety, team work, and innovation.
We want to have a positive impact on the environment and communities we operate in. We work with our stakeholders to develop better outcomes in the communities we operate in.
We support and develop our people by embracing diversity, equity and inclusion in our workplace and providing world-class learning and development opportunities.
We have achieved Rainbow Tick accreditation, recognising a supportive work environment that is accepting of peoples’ differences, and embraces diversity of sexual and gender identities.
We have a range of youth development and student scholarships which can be viewed here.
If you have a sponsorship request that relates to these focus areas please email your proposal to us.
Be a leader in making sustainable products, build healthy homes, deliver sustainable infrastructure
We recognise the opportunity to make a significant and positive impact on environmental sustainability within our industries. We are looking at our whole operations including how we work with our supply chain, to achieve sustainable building solutions.
We have voluntarily published nine Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across New Zealand and Australia and currently have more EPDs than any other company in New Zealand. EPDs provide our customers with transparent data on the impact of our products to make an informed choice.

We will set a consistent sustainability standard for our construction projects, and help our customers understand how our focus on sustainability meets their needs.
Transparent reporting, and partner with our supply chain to deliver sustainable outcomes
We want to be transparent about our performance on environmental and social issues as part of our governance process. This means benchmarking our sustainability performance and being included in leading sustainability indexes.
We are working with our supply chain to develop an environmental, social and governance assessment, to better understand their impacts as well as our own.
We work within our industry to improve sustainability of products and projects, and we are active members of the following sustainability organisations:
Sustainable development goals
The Sustainable Development Goals are a global set of goals adopted by New Zealand, Australia and all United Nations member states that support strategies to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. Fletcher Building’s sustainability aims support the following eight United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
2019 is information available in the 2019 Annual Report.
We are committed to promoting a culture of compliance, honesty and ethical behaviour. We want the people who work for us, and those we do business with, to be comfortable approaching the organisation with any concerns about conduct which appears unethical or improper. We provide a confidential service called FBuCall for staff and those we do business with to raise concerns.
FBuCall is a free and anonymous phone and online service. It is managed externally, independently of Fletcher Building.
